130 strength will let you use any shield from 80 and up, except the 124 shield which requires 140 strength. An AS shield will require 15-25% less strength, an AtS 15-20% less. You'll need 98-111 strength for that (105-119 if you really want the 124 shield).

The alternative is to get as little strength as possible for the other gear, which is 100 if you want to be able to equip the best boots, gauntlets and bracelets (15-25% less strength if it's PrS gear), in which case you should probably aim for the Great Shield (104 strength, less if it's AS or AtS). That's 78-89 strength total.

i have been away for a while but shouldn't we use orbs now after they increased their stats so much?

I haven't done the math, but they are at least a somewhat viable alternative. Orbs get less absorb which will hurt you a great deal while leveling since 3-4 extra damage per enemy when you're fighting 20+ at a time adds up and it won't take much to negate the HP penalty rather quickly. You get slightly more absorb out of mixing and aging, but you get less overall block no matter what (especially with aging). You do get a lot of defense when you age, but I don't know how effective defense is in general so it's hard to say.

Either way, my general advice would be that if you fight strong and fairly few enemies, go for the orb to get the most out of the HP bonus (especially for the mage, who can get a HP boost of upwards 30%). If you're fighting many weaker enemies, go for the shield to take advantage of the extra absorb. The weaker and the more of them there are, the bigger is the advantage of the shield. That is assuming you use the base item, mixed items, or fairly low levels of aging. At high levels of aging, I don't really know how the balance will shift (defense vs block efficiency).

For me its a lot less about shield vs orb and more of defense vs damage. Its my personal opinion, but I always try to minimize the amount of defense I need since at some point it just seems excessive. Granted we lost our VL bonus and now it seems bugged for the worse, but there is a T5 skill that is supposed to give us this back or at least help our survivability.

I always had an orb even before the orb update patch, and the stats I save on strength and put into spirit seem to make a real difference when I compete against other priestesses of similar level or gear [a little spirit can be really strong on the formulas of good skills]. Now that they block almost as much as a shield, I don't really see a need for shields. You have to keep in mind shields mean no spec bonus, and the higher the gear the more that hurts. Unless you plan to +20 a shield for a lot of block, the HP > minimal block for hunt, and high def can be just as useful as abs in PvE, keep in mind 100 def = 1 abs. Defense is better than just a raw abs gain, since you get both defense rating + abs, and high defense rating causes a lot of training monsters to miss.

At the end of the day it just comes down to personal preference, since there are clear pros/cons to each.
