How does item integrity work?

I'm not sure I fully understand how item integrity works in pristontale. For instance if I'm using a hammer that has 134/168 integrity... Does that mean I'm doing less damage or something?

 

Can someone please expand on this for me please?

No, the damage will be the same regardless of the integrity of your item. However, when it reaches 0 integrity, you will not be able to wear it or do any damage.
