Heavy metal is a wide genre. I think you mean death or black metal or related subgenre. Some of those are kinda... strange. Gothic metal is also sometimes a bit out there, but generally more tolerable.

 

Personally, I prefer symphonic/melodic rock or metal. Grunting is not a favorite, but I can stand it if it's not overdone (or at least done well).
