Can smelting fail with dark stones?

For the tier 5 quest the guides say smelt the dark stone with the magma rock, endurance tear, and energy flower.

I tried that but the smelting process failed.

 

I used 4 rocks if you're wondering.

I also failed, I think the patch bugged it or something. I thought the first two might've been a fluke, so I relogged and tried again, still failed. Lost all the materials for the dark gaia armor, not happy.
