~Trinitas~ 0 Report post Posted December 24, 2011 warning: if you don't know what SOPA is you won't get it HEADLINE: SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. (Dec. 23, 2011) - Go Daddy is no longer supporting SOPA I just had to to laugh at this...i guess they learned a lesson from netflix pissing off their customers earlier this year LOL On October 31st, 2011, TechDirt[18] and the Domains[19] both published articles stating that Christine Jones, the general counsel and corporate secretary from GoDaddy.com submitted a piece to Politico stating the company’s support of SOPA, then called the E-Parasite Bill. TechDirt countered the statement by posting screen shots of how GoDaddy itself encourages people to violate SOPA by suggesting domain names that would infringe on other established sites’ copyright and name trademarks. The day before the bill was set to be heard in the House, November 15th, GoDaddy filed an official statement[20] breaking down exactly why they were supporting SOPA, claiming that “there is no question that we need these added tools to counteract illegal foreign sites that are falling outside the jurisdiction of U.S. law enforcement.” This information was relatively unknown until December 22nd when Redditor selfprodigy[21] posted about GoDaddy’s statement to the Politics subreddit, suggesting GoDaddy users move their domains on December 29th to protest the company’s support of the bill. In response, founder of Ambassador Jeff Epstein provided a step-by-step guide on how to transfer domains from GoDaddy to another host.[28] After the news broke, GoDaddy made an official blog post[22] combining both the Politico piece and the statement they gave to the house. News of the boycott spread to The Escapist[23], Ars Technica[24], Gizmodo[25] and the International Business Times[26]. Additionally, Cheezburger’s CEO Ben Huh stated[27] that he would move the company’s 1000+ domain names off of GoDaddy if they did not change their stance on the bill. The following day, GoDaddy[29] released a statement by CEO Warren Adelman announcing that they will no longer be supporting the act and pulled down a post outlining the reasons they had previously supported it. Syko 0 Report post Posted December 27, 2011 Since I was bored, I actually read up on SOPA. Essentially, it is a way for the government to further prosecute people who infringe upon copyright. At least, that is what I summed it up for myself when I read a bit of it.
~Trinitas~ 0 Report post Posted December 27, 2011 well, the supposed intent of this bill is yes to stop/protect against copyright infringement, or "stop online piracy", which ok i get what they tried to do there...but realistically when reading more into the bill, its really just censorship on steroids, the governemnt will control what we can/cant access/do online and this infringes on our rights as americans lol...long story short it threatens more than it protects...so rather than fixing something this is actually taking a problem and creating something worse...which our leaders seem to LOVE to do lately ??? I have a domain & other services through godaddy, so i lol'ed when i saw this article. well... sopa in brazillian portuguese is soup. i thought the same too (in spanish) ._. this sopa is not yummy though LOL
