Where to level

I recently started playing again and I've got a couple 9x characters, a 102 mage and a 107 priest.

Everyone's telling me to go MD1 and use my mage or priest but I can't tank for shoots there because my gear is rather underwhelming.

What options do I have to level my alts and my mage/priest?

I would say use your mage for now.

 

He is pretty tanky with decent gear and energy shield level 10.

 

If you lack the proper gear I'd advice you to get the necassary gold to get them. You could do this with the item filter on (settings set to gold, premium, everything else) in Iron2. Perhaps you could level up one of your level 9x chars while doing this.
