What does a sphere of randomness do?

I picked up a strange winged thing named sphere of randomness laying around in Ricarten because I pick things up laying around when I find just in curiosity. Its a beautiful blue-shiny stone, so I decided to keep it. It didn't change anything apparently on my gameplay, so I wonder whats its function in-game...
